This is John Lee Hooker at his best.
This session displays a thoroughly off-the-cuff improvised feel, but that was the Hook’s standard operating procedure no matter where he happened to be recording or who his sidemen were. “I Feel Good” is an early example of his “endless boogie” attack, tailor-made for the blue-rock constituency that was so enthusiastically embracing him in the US.
“Baby Baby” brings the proceedings way back in the alley, while Hooker transforms the familiar anthem “Roll And Tumble” into a personalized vehicle. “Dazie Mae,” “Looking Back Over My Day,” “Come On Baby,” and the remainder of the extended session’s musical bounty spotlight additional facets of Hooker’s groundbreaking blues approach.
